Uncle Graham “Bootsie” Thorpe (1950–2026)

Aboriginal Community Elders Services (ACES) joins Community in mourning the loss of Uncle Graham “Bootsie” Thorpe; a much respected Elder whose life was defined by generosity, leadership, and deep cultural responsibility. Uncle Bootsie was a guiding presence, a fierce advocate, and a mentor to many, and his passing leaves a profound gap across Community.
Throughout his life, Uncle Bootsie stood beside Aboriginal people with compassion and humility. He approached his work not as a service, but as a responsibility to family always leading with care, honesty, and respect. His strength came from lived experience, cultural knowledge, and an unwavering belief in the importance of social and emotional wellbeing.
His impact extended strongly into the criminal justice space, where Uncle Bootsie supported countless Community members navigating court processes and complex challenges. He was a steady and trusted presence for people experiencing substance use issues, family violence, homelessness, and mental health concerns.
Uncle Bootsie moved seamlessly between roles advocate, counsellor, cultural guide ensuring people were treated with dignity and understanding.
His role on the Koori Court Elders Advisory Committee at the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court further strengthened culturally safe practices and protocols, bringing cultural authority, accountability, and compassion into the justice system.
Uncle Bootsie’s lifetime of service was recognised with the Victorian NAIDOC Aboriginal Person of the Year Award in 1996, and later through his induction into the Victorian Aboriginal Honour Roll in 2018. These honours reflect only a fraction of the legacy he leaves behind one built on courage, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to Community.

ACES extends our heartfelt condolences to Uncle Bootsie’s family, loved ones, and all who walked alongside him.

We honour his life, his leadership, and the countless lives he touched. Uncle Bootsie will be remembered with deep respect and enduring gratitude.

Rest easy, Uncle. Your legacy lives on.
